Welcome to Portland Parenting Connection, soon to be incorporated as a non-profit. Our organization is made up of practitioners and all people who parent. As a mission objective, we will promote and support well-researched and respectful approaches to parenting. Portland Parenting Connection will support Portland's parenting communities by hosting conferences for children and adults.
We decided to promote these satisfying approaches to parenting by holding yearly parenting and children conferences to get these new understandings out to as many people as possible - sowing the seeds so that these concepts of connection parenting will take root and spread.

The Genesis of Portland Parenting Connection
– Ed Hofmann-Smith, ND, Founder
“Babies should come with an instruction manual!”
How many times have I heard that half joking comment during my many years of naturopathic family practice. What this means is, parents are struggling and are looking for reliable guidance. They may have read several books and talked to other parents or their own parents, but are finding no satisfying agreement. Aletha Solter’s ground-breaking work was the first real clarity for me, and when I recommended it to parents, they often found it to be a wonderful help. Now it seems that there is a ground swell, often referred to as “connection parenting (a term coined by Pam Leo),” that seems to have grown in part from her important work and in part from “attachment parenting”. We decided to promote these satisfying approaches to parenting by holding yearly conferences to get these new understandings out to as many people as possible - sowing the seeds so that these concepts of connection parenting will take root and spread.
Knowing these important parenting concepts is an important beginning of really satisfying parenting and happier kids, but further support is also needed. That is the second function of Portland Parenting Connection. We plan to help parents and practitioners put these concepts into practice through local support groups, a listserv, a blog and perhaps additional visiting speakers or workshops.
